U.S.'s First National WWI Memorial Near The White House
The United States' first national World War One
memorial, "A Soldier's Journey," was unveiled near The White House.
The 60ft (18m) long and 10ft (3m) high frieze, created at the Pangolin Foundry
in Stroud, features five scenes and 38 human figures. Sculptor Sabin Howard's
work was completed over four and a half years, with actors from America
traveling to Gloucestershire to pose for the sculpture. They dressed in period
clothing and created 3D images, which were then turned into foam and clay
before being cast in bronze. The sculptures were then sent back to Stroud to be
cast in bronze. The memorial is seen as a significant contribution to the
memorials in the capital city and a way for people of the generation to say
thank you on their behalf to the Americans of that generation. The company from
Stroud is proud of its ability to work on a world stage like this.
